State Fines Detroit Renewable Power
September 21, 2016
The Air Quality Division of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality informed Zero Waste Detroit that Detroit Renewable Power (DRP) was issued eight Notices of Violation (NOVs) regarding excessive odors. The violations occurred from June through September of 2016. Additionally this year, DRP received NOVs for exceeding permit levels for particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and for failure to conduct gas audits on their boilers. As per the Consent Judgment, DRP has been fined in the tens of thousands of dollars, according to MDEQ.
DRP is the facility that burns Detroit’s residential solid waste, as well as waste from surrounding communities. Less than 20% of the waste burned at DRP is Detroit waste. These violations represent the environmental burden on Detroiters from incineration.
