ZWD Summer Updates!
Curbside Participation Rates
The City of Detroit Department of Public Works confirmed that, as of June 3rd, Detroit’s curbside recycling rate jumped to over 15% from 11% in October. We have much to be proud of at Zero Waste Detroit.
Since last fall, ZWD has completed over 72 recycling workshop, enrolled nearly 2,500 residents into the curbside recycling program, and formally trained eight community recycling educators who are committed to hosting workshops in their neighborhoods.
Zero Waste Detroit’s curbside recycling workshops are free cart giveaways, meaning that those who attend will be able to enroll in the recycling program for free (waiving the usual $25 enrollment cost.) However, many residents are not aware of this incredible opportunity, and we need all hands on deck to promote this message. Please contact ZWD if you would like to host a curbside recycling workshop in your community!
Mandatory Recycling in Detroit Municipal Buildings
In June, the Detroit City Council unanimously passed a resolution for mandatory recycling in City of Detroit facilities. City Councilman Scott Benson drafted the resolution. While there is no implementation plan currently in place, the resolution is a great step forward in Detroit’s zero waste leadership.
Michigan Recycling Conference
On May 5th, Zero Waste Detroit was honored to speak at the Michigan Recycling Conference with Scott Benson, Detroit City Councilman District 3 on key takeaways from the The Detroit Green Task Force‘s Nov 2015 delegation to San Francisco.
