The Zero Waste Detroit Coalition (ZWD) will be holding a community meeting to address concerns expressed by residents over smells emanating from the Detroit Renewable Power Waste Incinerator at 5700 Russell in Detroit.
In 2014 alone, Detroit Renewable Power has received 17 notices of odor violations from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). After numerous violations and persistent community pressure, DEQ sent the incinerator to its enforcement unit a year ago. Since that time the state and the incinerator have been negotiating a consent judgment, which has yet to be finalized. ZWD would like to see this process expedited, and demand that Detroit Renewable Power stop dragging their feet.
The meeting purpose is to discuss ways to address these violations, and ensure that further action is taken on behalf of local residents. The event will include a panel discussion, Q & A, and a plan for next steps.”
