Zero Waste Detroit would like to thank Detroit’s Department of Public Works for their release of the 2012 Annual Recycling report. The report notes the expansion of the curbside recycling program into three new neighborhoods, all with strong citizen participation rates. There is however opportunity for growth in citizen participation and tonnage collected in the existing curbside areas. The low amount of tonnage collected provides opportunity for “capture of the City’s waste stream prior to disposal”, as stated in the charter. DPW’s annual recycling analysis is beneficial in looking forward and in the development of a comprehensive recycling plan.
